St. Louis Renewable Energy Summit: Call for Shift to 100 percent Renewable Energy

The Summit will feature a panel of experts who will lead a discussion on renewable energy from a variety of perspectives.

Missouri Deer Hunters Help MDC In Efforts To Fight Chronic-Wasting Disease

The collection of 19,200 Deer harvest tissue samples were collected from 29 Missouri counties during the opening weekend of fall firearms deer season. The samples will help the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) evaluate next steps in chronic-wasting-disease management efforts.

The Share the Harvest program, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Conservation Federation of Missouri, enables hunters to help families in need through the voluntary deer meat donation.  Since it started in 1992, Share the Harvest has provided more than 3.5 million pounds of lean, healthy venison to help feed hungry Missourians.

Environment Missouri maps out “50 Steps Towards Carbon-Free Transportation” to fight Global Warming

Environment Missouri has some ideas about helping transportation be carbon-free. Matter of fact, they have 50 of them.

In a recent news release, Environment Missouri shared how it is taking their ideas straight to St. Louis City Hall. This week, the group released the report in front of the local government building with Marielle Brown of Trailnet and Roger Lewis of Saint Louis University speaking at the event.

TRIM Grants Awarded To Missouri Communities

The Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (TRIM) grant program awarded 36 Missouri communities a total of $380,754 this year. The monetary awards are granted through the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).

The TRIM grant program is “cost-sharing funding for government agencies, public schools, and nonprofit groups to manage, improve or conserve trees on public lands.

On the morning of Sept. 2, some Times readers reported that they felt an earthquake. They did, indeed. My sister in Kansas City said almost all of her friends felt it in Cow Town.

St. Louis and KC may be in for more shake, rattle and rolling due to man-made earthquakes. Scientists at a recent Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) conference noted that gas drillers in rural Oklahoma are the culprits for the quaking.

Hunter’s Moon Hayrides At Columbia Bottom Conservation Area

Discover nature under the light of the Hunter’s Moon at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Columbia Bottom Conservation Area.

Columbia Bottom will hold free Hunter’s Moon hayrides Thursday, Oct. 20 and Friday, Oct. 2 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. both evenings.  Light from the waning Hunter’s Moon will offer visitors a chance to see nature come to life after sunset. A hayride through the rich mosaic of natural habitats on the 4,300-acre conservation area is a perfect way to explore the sights and sounds of its nocturnal residents. Rides will depart from the visitor center at 5:30, 5:45, 7:15, and 7:30 each night. They will last about 90 minutes.

The Hunter’s Moon hayrides at Columbia Bottom are free, but advanced registration is required by calling 314-877-6014. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. Accommodations for visitors with disabilities are also available with advanced notice.
