‘Yes For Our Parks!’ Campaign Wants To Protect St. Louis County Parks

Below is a letter from a concerned citizen and advocate for Prop 2. Please take a moment to read why she and several environmental and park preservation organizations started the ‘Yes For Our Parks!’ campaign to promote voter passage of Proposition 2 on the November 6 ballot in St. Louis County.

“If approved by voters, it will protect our County parks from being sold or disposed of without a vote of the people and provides county voters with a say over major changes to our parkland.”

St. Louis Audubon Society’s Fall Gaggle On Tap At Schlafly Tap Room Nov. 4

On November 4, the St. Louis Audubon Society will hold its Fall Gaggle, an awards celebration and auction, at the Schlafly Tap Room in downtown St. Louis. The annual gathering raises funds to further efforts to conserve the environment and educate the community about its natural wonders. Key leaders from within the organization and around the region will be celebrated for their contributions.

Forest ReLeaf of Missouri will receive the “Outstanding Conservationist” award at this year’s Fall Gaggle. Since 1993, Forest ReLeaf has planted more than 150,000 trees in underserved communities and areas affected by major weather disasters throughout Missouri and Illinois. Forest ReLeaf staff and volunteers are dedicated to restoring and sustaining urban forests and educating people about the many benefits of trees.

Under The Stars At Forest Park With The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra Sept. 12!

Head to Forest Park for a night under the stars with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at 7p.m.

It’s the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s 50th annual FREE Forest Park Concert at the base of Art Hill. The orchestra will perform many classical favorites.

The event is free and no tickets are required. Pack a picnic, grab a blanket and relax with family and friends at the base of Art Hill and don’t rush off because you won’t want to miss the impressive firework display after the concert!

West Lake Landfill Whistleblowers Honored

Two brave ladies from North County were honored at the Gateway Journalism Review (GJR)annual First Amendment Celebration.

Dawn Chapman and Karen Nickel, founders of Just Moms STL, an advocacy group focused on the cleanup of nuclear waste contained in West Lake Landfill, were honored for “blowing the whistle” on the inept handling of atomic waste in the St. Louis region. Every day more St. Louis residents are becoming aware of our city’s role in the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb – and the deadly legacy left behind here.

Tillman Ignite Spring Jamboree April 14

Don’t miss the SPRING JAMBOREE at Tillman, Saturday, April 14!

“Tillman will host an IGNITE community event from 4:00-8:00pm! We are inviting everyone from the surrounding community to join. No need to RSVP, just show up!”

Schedule of events:

4:00-6:00pm • Build! A variety of projects to enhance the new space, including the installation of rain barrels and birdhouses decorated by Tillman students, building raised beds and maybe doing some plant installation.

5:00-7:00pm • Learn! Student Led Tours will take place at 5:00 and 5:30 during the Jamboree. Look for the Tour Guides in the red shirts!

Community Resources Expo–Exhibitors that have resources for schools engaged in outdoor education as well as some folks that offer resources for folks who live in the neighborhood and want to know more about ethical land care. View the list of organizations attending the event.

6:00-8:00pm • Party! Party! Listen to 3rd Floor (Kelly Judge’s band), visit food trucks, take tours of the new learning space, dance, and play!

Celebrate Forest Park Now and Forever With A Party At Pagoda Circle

Celebrate the success of Forever: The Campaign for Forest Park’s Future at a free gathering at the iconic Pagoda Circle. The campaign helped to raise funding for park improvements and maintenance.

Hosted by Forest Park Forever, the FREE public event will offer live music from the local band Fat Pocket and popular local food trucks will be on-site for the public to purchase some tasty treats. The event will be family-friendly and also pet-friendly.

When: Wednesday, April 11, 5:00-7:30 p.m.
Where: Pagoda Circle
Parking: Free parking is available in the Visitor Center east & west lots, the Festival & Parking Plaza and the lower Muny lot.

Outdoor lovers with a competitive streak can rise to the challenge during a great nature-themed contest this spring.

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Rockwoods Reservation will host the Amazing Rockwoods Race competition Saturday, April 14 from Noon-4:30 p.m. Much like the popular TV program, participants will take on physical and mental challenges as they discover nature in a unique and active way.

EPA Updates Public About West Lake Landfill and Requests Public Comment Submissions

EPA public meeting about proposed West Lake Landfill remedies held March 6, 2018, in Bridgeton, Mo.

To simply write that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) public meeting detailing proposed remedies for West Lake Landfill was a packed house would be an understatement. The meeting hall was overflowing and parking was a mess. It is estimated that more than 1,000 people attended.

The meeting, held March 6, 2018, in Bridgeton, Mo, outlined the eight different plans the EPA is currently considering as a remedy to the illegally dumped radioactive waste contained in West Lake Landfill.
