Turn today’s trash into tomorrow’s treasures at The Magic House!
On Saturday, October 8 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, October 9 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, art educators from Perrenial will be at The Magic House teaching visitors how to reduce waste by turning recyclable materials into eco-friendly masterpieces such as jewelry, décor and stationery.
Recycled Art is part of The Magic House’s Visiting Artist Series. This drop-in workshop is free with Museum admission and no reservations are required.

The First Secret City: Documentary Film Explores Harmful Legacy Of Nuclear Waste In STL
C.D. Stelzer, a local investigative journalist, has spent years following and reporting on nuclear waste issues in the St. Louis area.
Stelzer spent five years creating, “The First Secret City,” a documentary film that tells the story of St. Louis’ radioactive history and the resulting harmful legacy.
In Don Corrigan’s latest podcast, he talks with Stelzer about the documentary film, the effort it took for Stelzer and project partner to create the film, and the continuing issues with nuclear waste contamination at the Westlake Landfill and Coldwater Creek areas.
A screening of the film is planned for September 14, 2016, at UMSL’s Gallery 210. (find screening information below.)

Celebrate Our Prairie Heritage At Shaw Nature Reserve September 17th
Prairie Day is a family-friendly celebration of the nature and culture of our grassland heritage. Shaw Nature Reserve’s 250-acre restored prairie is the backdrop for a day of fun and educational activities for the whole family where visitors can relive the days of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
The biennial event is Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is located at Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit. (directions are listed below) The event is presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation and Shaw Nature Reserve.

LOCAL EVENT – Zika and Heat Waves: New Public Health Challenges and Climate Change
The Sierra Club and Washington University’s Global Health Center at the Institute for Public Health are hosting an event on August 18, 2016, to highlight the public health impacts of climate change, including the expansion of vector-borne illnesses, like Zika. Also, the topic of heat deaths – the Harvard School of Public Health has generated estimates of the increase in heat deaths in metro St Louis due to rising temperatures.

THE MDC WILL BE AT THE MISSOURI STATE FAIR TO HELP YOU “DISCOVER NATURE”
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) brings nature to the State Fair, August 11 – 21, 2016, held in Sedalia, Mo. Families can “enjoy conservation-related demonstrations at the Department’s outdoor pavilion.”
Peanut the Turtle will be absent this year at the State Fair. He has been retired and is living life at Powder Valley Nature Center in Kirkwood, Mo.
