LOCAL EVENT – Zika and Heat Waves: New Public Health Challenges and Climate Change

hand-1030565_1920The Sierra Club and Washington University’s Global Health Center at the Institute for Public Health are hosting an event on August 18, 2016, to highlight the public health impacts of climate change, including the expansion of vector-borne illnesses, like Zika. Also, the topic of heat deaths – the Harvard School of Public Health has generated estimates of the increase in heat deaths in metro St Louis due to rising temperatures.

THE MDC WILL BE AT THE MISSOURI STATE FAIR TO HELP YOU “DISCOVER NATURE”

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) brings nature to the State Fair, August 11 – 21, 2016, held in Sedalia, Mo. Families can “enjoy conservation-related demonstrations at the Department’s outdoor pavilion.”

Peanut the Turtle will be absent this year at the State Fair. He has been retired and is living life at Powder Valley Nature Center in Kirkwood, Mo.

Pass by the front lobby, the ticket lines and concession stands, and the watchful predatory eye of the T-Rex, and you’ll find a different kind of exhibit at the Saint Louis Science Center. It’s an exhibit, complete with chickens, vegetable gardens and tractors, and it tells the modern-day story of how our food makes it from a farmer’s hands all the way to our dinner table.

Environmental “Lunch and Learn” Sessions At Webster University

Web U lunch leran June 2016Learn about strategies and solutions being created and used right here in our local community to improve environmental, social and economic sustainability on Wednesdays from 12pm-1pm at Webster University. This series of special presentations are FREE and box lunches will be provided!

All sessions will be held in room 202 of the East Academic Building located at 545 Garden Ave, Webster Groves, MO 63119. Please RSVP for each session to help provide accurate attendance numbers. Parking is available in Garden Park Plaza parking garage. The sessions run through August 10, 2016.
