Seed St. Louis announced today it received a grant for $60,000 from Bayer Fund, a philanthropic arm of Bayer in the U.S. In line with Bayer’s vision of health for all, hunger for none, this grant will be used towards building a better future by providing community groups in St. Louis City and St. Louis County with the education, resources, and a network to grow their own food. Having access to healthy, safe, and affordable food is crucial; the lack of access to foods that support healthy diets has a direct link to negative health outcomes.
“Seed St. Louis greatly appreciates the support from Bayer Fund through this grant. For years, Bayer has brought volunteers to community gardens and provided financial support for new and expanding community gardens. We look forward to growing this partnership into the future,” said Matt Schindler, CEO.
In our mutual goal to see the communities we serve flourish, this grant from Bayer Fund will support our organization by allowing us to promote healthy behaviors in general by getting residents active in their gardens. With more than 25% of residents participating in no physical activity, community gardens can create safe opportunities for exercise. General gardening, including pulling weeds, planting seedlings, harvesting vegetables can burn 200-400 calories per hour. Gardens also promote healthy lifestyles through the nutritional value of the food they grow. Each pound of food grown equals 8 servings of food.
As a philanthropic arm of Bayer in the U.S., Bayer Fund pursues the company’s vision of “health for all, hunger for none” by working with organizations and nonprofits to strengthen the country’s agricultural communities.
“Through Bayer Fund’s giving, we’re enabling and strengthening organizations that are working to make real, sustainable impacts in their local communities across the United States,” said Al Mitchell, President of Bayer Fund. “Programs like Improving Food Access and Community Health help combat the critical issue of food insecurity, and we’re proud to play a role with helping even more people in our community have access to healthy, nutritious food.”
In 2022, Bayer Fund awarded more than $13.4 million to over 2,700 charitable and nonprofit organizations to help address essential needs in Food and Nutrition, STEM Education and Health & Wellness. Since 2017, nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have received nearly $90 million.
